Hey all. I just joined a few days ago and I've read through a few entries, but I had a few questions of my own.
I'm yet another American (United States-ian) who is in the process of applying to graduate programs in the UK. I'm applying to MA of History of Art at the Courtauld Institute and UCL, and also the MA of Postcolonial Cultural and Global Policy at Goldsmiths. (I'm also curious about Goldsmiths' Contemporary Art Theory MA.) I'm coming from a Media Studies background, trying to incorporate that into a career in arts admin. I'm wondering if there's any one who would be able to tell me more about their personal experiences either with these programs or the schools in general -- I have a few questions I'd like to chat about via email. (I'm also looking into the schools' contacts themselves for someone to talk to.)
I had a friend who studied briefly at Goldsmiths and didn't find the administration very supportive, but he was also not studying under any degree program.
I'd also like to hear more about living in New Cross or Camden. I've heard some okay and less than okay things about New Cross, but I'd like to hear more. I have read the tagged entries, so I understand if there's not much else to add. Any favorite hidden bits of New Cross or Camden or London in general?
Any other tips or info for an American who has never been to London before would be much appreciated! I'm not walking into this blindly, but every little bit helps.
Thanks! |

| random questions! |

Since I'm very young (turned 17 three days ago!) and adventurous (ha), the idea of staying in the US is a little eh for me but I haven't had my heart set anywhere either, so I'm applying in Wales, Ireland and England. But because of this, my high school counselor never really paid attention to me or my questions because she figured my mom wouldn't let me out of her sight until I was 18. But like most people here, I've done all my own research and am almost ready to send my applications, but first, a few questions:
1) Bournemouth has this really nice direct application for international undergrad students, which I'm taking advantage of (I guess they respond to you faster, or something.) and my AP Spanish teacher filled out the questionnaire part. I don't know if anyone has had this problem but if so, what do I put in the "reference letter" part of my UCAS application (because they still want you to apply online, that way you can check possible offers)? A separate real letter? (I imagine so because I'm not exclusively applying to Bournemouth. )
2) If I do need to get a separate can I get the letter from a club advisor? My Spanish teacher is terrible at writing much of anything and I would not trust her with my reference letter. I know there was a similar question a few posts down but that one was asking if a different teacher could write it. Since my club advisor is not my teacher (she teaches special education classes) I don't know if that would be okay. I've been active in this club (Students Organized Against Prejudice) all four years of high school.
Also, the reason my spanish teacher filled out the questionnaire is because I'll be applying for a Bsc Archaeology & Anthropology and since my school has no related courses (or at least no specific archaeology courses) I figured I could pass Spanish as something related to cultural archaeology. I also take AP English and AP Government but these are teachers I don't know very well, my AP Spanish teacher was also my Spanish 1-2 teacher in Freshman year. |
